Chapter 3 Lab

9/14/2022

Objective:

To obtain some basic knowledge of various types of processors used in computers, mobile devices, and laptops. Being able to compare and contrast these processors is important. Processors in devices are rapidly changing.

Assignment Purpose:

Around Week 6, you will have to create a quote for a computer and select the components. Then you will need to explain why you chose those components based on how you use the computer. This assignment and subsequent assignments are preparing you for that comprehensive assignment.

Questions:

For each question, provide the source where you found the information. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR ANY QUESTIONS THAT DO NOT PROVIDE THEIR SOURCE.

  1. Check the processor that is in your mobile device (e.g. mobile phone or tablet). If you don’t have a mobile device, then locate a mobile phone or tablet online and respond to the questions below.

  2. What type of processor does it use? (1 point)

    1. A15 Bionic chip (https://www.macrumors.com/)

  3. What are some features of the processor for your device? (2 points)

    1. It has a 6 core cpu with two efficiency, four efficiency cores, and 4 core gpu. 15.8 trillion operations per second. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_A15)

Source(s) Used:

  1. Locate another model of a mobile device you chose online. Respond to the same questions as above:

  2. What type of processor does it use? (1 point)

    1. Tensor chip (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_6)

  3. What are some features of the processor for the device? (2 points)

    1. Enhancing images and performing machine learning. Built so machine learning can run outside of the cloud not needing internet access. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_6)

  4. Based on your device, what features in your processor or the other device you found are advantageous. For example, if you found features in your processor that were better than the other device, explain why. If you found features in the other processor that would beneficial based on how you use your device, explain it. Select two or three features. (2 points)

    1. The A15 chip has a technology developed by apple called Avalanche running. 2 of the high-speed cores use the avalanche running at 3,24GHz. 4 of the other cores use a technology called blizzard running at 2,01GHz. The chip runs both high performance cores at 3,180 MHZ which is faster than previous generations. I see having avalanche and blizzard technology as advantageous as you only need to use the high-performance cores when needed. Using low performance cores for more simpler functions will extend battery life and efficiency of the phone. A feature that the Tensor chip has that the A15 does not. It allows the pixel 6 to run machine learning applications more efficiently pulling less power and resources. This means the android os can use more complex speech recognition, image recognition, and big data processes that other phones would struggle with. As machine learning is the future I can see a phone with better ml capabilities being advantageous.

Source(s) Used:

  1. What are the basic differences between INTEL’s I5, I7, and I9 processors? (3 points)

    1. The i9 chip is Intel’s top of the line processor that simply has the most chips compared to the others. It has 16 cores total 8 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores. Efficiency cores are used for background processes while performance cores are used for more intense processing that uses one or two threads. The i7 has the same amount of performance cores but only 4 efficiency cores giving it a total of 12 cores. The i7 chip supports ddr5 ram so faster ram can be used with this chip. The i5 chip has less 6 performance cores less than the other two. It has 4 efficiency cores the same number as the i7 so the i5 is only less powerful when it comes to video editing, or gaming processes that only use one or two threads.

Source(s) Used:

  1. Investigate AMD and Intel Processors. Provide some relevant information on what you found (speed, cores, cache, name, etc.). Select two of the available processor models to describe. (2 points per processor model)

AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 3990X, is a beast of a processor from AMD. It has 64 cores and clocks in at 2.9 GHZ. It has 128 threads, 4mb of L1 cache, 32MB of L2 cache, and 256 mb of L3 Cache. It can be overclocked to 4.3ghz (recommended max) and is recommended to use water cooling as a processor this bulky heats up a lot. It is compatible with ddr4 ram. On the intel side you have the i9-10980XE Extreme Edition. It’s only got 18 cores with 36 total threads. It sports a 4.60 Ghz max with and overclocking max of 4.80. This is higher than the AMD chip but it has significantly less cores to work with. It has a total of 24.75 mb of intel smart cache. The AMD chip has the intel chip beat when it comes to Cache memory storage. In my opinion the AMD chip is the better performing chip if you are looking only at the physical builds of both chips. Intel chips do have hyperthreading technology which AMD chips lack but AMD chips do have simultaneous multi-threading which is very similar.
